Does your horse go back willingly to the place where it is kept?

→ Does it suffer from many bite wounds?

→ Is it frightened to go back to its herd?

→ Does it stand around apathetically?

→ Does it suffer from excessive weight loss?

→ Does it often suffer from illnesses?

Observing your horse closely for half an hour or so can be very informative – preferably in such a way that it does not notice you. This can give a mass of information regarding the rank order, the behaviour between the individual horses, feeding and drinking habits and many other matters. These observations help you to recognise the physical and mental state of the horse – and at times it is more exciting than any television programme!

If you are in any doubt that the horse is feeling comfortable, you should think of an alternative to the present accommodation. This need not immediately mean a change of yards – sometimes quite small changes that all those involved can accomplish can help solve the problem.
